Description

A special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics

Introduction

Future robots will be expected to work closely and interact safely with humans as well as real-world objects. Among various sensing modalities needed for this purpose, the sense of touch is particularly important. Unlike other senses (e.g. vision, audio), it involves complex physical interaction, and plays a fundamental role in estimating properties such as shape, texture, hardness, material type and many more. The sense of touch provides action related information, such as slip, and helps in carrying out actions, such as rolling an object between fingers without dropping it.

Researchers working in the academy or industry are invited to submit papers to this Special Issue of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics (T-RO) on the theoretical, technological and experimental aspects of design, development, and validation of novel robotic touch sensing systems, their integration with robots, and the effective utilization of touch information.

Scope, description and more information

Topics and details can be found in the Call for Papers that can be downloaded from the link below.

Author information is available on www.ieee-ras.org/tro/for_authors. Regular and short papers (in PDF) for this Special Issue should be submitted through T-RO Papercept at ras.papercept.net/journals/tro. In the first step of the submission procedure, select the appropriate Paper Type under the 'Special Issue' category. Specify then in the 'Cover Note' field that the paper is intended for the Special Issue on Rehabilitation Robotics.

T-RO considers also multimedia material (typically, videos) accompanying the submission of a paper. Instructions on the preparation of this material can be found on www.ieee-ras.org/tro/for_authors. Multimedia will appear side-by-side to the accepted paper in the electronic version of the Special Issue within IEEE Xplore.

The Call for Papers has also been published also in the April 2010 issue of T-RO.

The T-RO Editor Wan Kyun Chung is supervising this Special Issue.
